My Valentine Day

The Valentine Day is a conventional festival in the West. As the story goes, this festival is coming from a religionary story. A young churchman was arrested for his preaching. His spirit for the Christianism affected the old turnkey and his daughter. The churchman and the girl got in love little by little. But the churchman was condemned to death because the Christianism could not be allowed in that age. Before death penalty, the young churchman wrote a letter to the girl expressing his affection. In the day he died, the girl planted a tree with red flowers to indicate her miss. The day was 14th, February. Years later, the churchman was awarded by the Saint. Then that day was named by the young churchman’s name, St. Valentine, for preaching up his faithfulness.

Now the religion does not affect our lives so much, and the Valentine Day tardily lost its religionary signification. But the affection between the churchman and the girl is still touches us. Friends or couples select this day to express their love to each other. They change the gifts like chocolate, red rose, or the St. Valentine card full of love. Generally, boys present flowers to girls, and girls present chocolate in return. And it is the best chance for the boys and girls to represent their mind to each other.

When I met my boy friend, now updated to my husband, we changed gifts every Valentine Day. Sometimes was a bundle of roses, sometimes was a bottle of perfume, and sometimes was a pack of chocolate. These gifts did not spend too much money, but could represent that we care about each other so much. But we seldom had dinner in restaurant in the Valentine Day because there were too many people outside in that day. There was difficult to find a seat in any restaurant or other amusement place. We went out in a certain Valentine Day’s night, just walking and walking to find food. It was just like a big parade with thousands of people ‘snatching’ food. Finally, we tired so much and could not move any more, still as hungry as a wolf. We decided we should never add trouble to ourselves in that day. It was too terrible.

After we married, we seemed losing the passion to spend this festival and almost forgot giving gifts to each other. We spend more time on housework or how to cook a delicious dish or which fitment should be acquired for our home or accompany our parents. I think it is the life, from the ideal to the reality, and we adapt it then accept it.

I still treasure up several leaves which my husband represented to me first time and empty perfume bottle he first gave me. It was a sweet memory for us. But now maybe ‘together’ is the best gift for us with time going by.
